Expedia’s Survey on World’s Tourists: Japanese Rank No. 1 for Third Straight Year for Being Polite, Quiet, Non-complaining

Expedia’s survey titled as “Expedia Best Tourists 2009″ put Japanese tourist at No. 1 spot in overall evaluation. The survey was conducted to assess reputation of tourists from different countries by sending questionnaires to approximately 40,000 hotel managers in Europe, North and South America, and Asia/Pacific. Replies were obtained from 4,557 of them, representing about 12 percent of the total. Japanese tourists have taken first place for three years in a row since the survey started.

In this survey, from the viewpoint of respecting local culture and minding social manner, Japanese tourists ranked No. 1 in five behavioral categories of “politeness,” “courtesy,” “cleanness,” “quietness,” and “propensity to complain.” They came to No. 4 in “fashion sense” and No. 5 in “generosity,” and “lavishness in tipping.” One category on which they missed the spots within top five and fell to No. 24 was “readiness to speak local languages.” It is necessary to get a certain number of points in the poll to be listed in the upper part of the rankings, and it is only the Japanese among Asian nationalities that hold a position within the top five.

In the overall ranking, the British came to second place, Canadians to third, Germans to fourth, and Swiss to fifth. Americans, at eighth place in overall judgment, are rated as the worst in categories of “courtesy,” “tidiness in guest room,” and “quietness”; thus, their ratings were wide apart depending on the category.
