JAL Posts 11% Decrease in January International Passenger Loads – Seat Load Factor Improves by 10 Percentage Points

Japan Airlines, JALThe number of international passengers carried by Japan Airlines during the month of January this year dropped by 10.7 percent year-on-year to 824,875 in contrast to All Nippon Airways which registered a 13.7 percent year-on-year increase to 357,323 passengers. The airline also reduced its capacity, as measured by available seat kilometers (ASK), substantially by 21.5 percent, implementing downsizing of its aircraft and route restructuring. Consequently, traffic, as measured by revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), posted a 10.7 percent decrease, improving an average seat load factor by 10.1 percentage points to 70.5 percent.

In terms of passenger loads, the entire network declined from the year-ago month. Seat load factor, by route, however, showed an improvement year-on-year with the exception of the Guam route. The Pacific route registered an average seat load factor of 75.5 percent, the Oceania route 81.6 percent, the Guam route 72.3 percent and the Korea route 81.3 percent, exceeding an average seat load factor of 70 percent respectively on these four routes.

Meanwhile, the number of domestic passengers carried by JAL during the same month declined by 7.9 percent to 2,745,125 compared to the same month a year earlier. The airline reduced its ASK (available seat kilometers) by 3.3 percent, but RPK (revenue passenger kilometers) fell by 7.6 percent with an average seat load factor of 54.4 percent.
