JTB’s Overseas Travel Sales Down 4% in September, Number of Customers Up 16% Showing Growth in All Destinations
Consolidated travel sales by 14 companies (Note 1) of JTB Group dropped in September by 1.9 percent from last year to 105.7 billion yen, of which overseas travel was 37.9 billion yen, down 3.9 percent, narrowing the range of month-to-month decline. By segment, overseas group travel lost 19.3 percent as tie-up sales dipped 21.1 percent, ordinary groups sank 20.5 percent, and educational groups declined 25 percent, while groups from government offices and municipalities rose 49.1 percent. Package tour sales were up 8.7 percent with a 1.5 percent growth of LOOK and a 19.7 percent growth of media-channel package tours. In terms of the number of customers handled, those on LOOK increased 40.0 percent; and all destinations exhibited a positive growth, with a significant growth of 84.9 percent for China, 69.5 percent for Korea, and 48.5 percent for Taiwan among others. Total customers handled during the month in overseas travel increased 16.1 percent year-on-year. Note that no adjustments have been made in these figures according to the quarterly variation of fuel surcharge amount.
Sales of domestic travel made a fractional gain of 0.6 percent to 65.6 billion yen. Group travel lost 5 percent as ordinary groups fell 25.3 percent – business from various organizations down 14.5 percent and tie-up sales down 20.1 percent – although educational groups surged 56.1 percent. Package tour ACE grew 0.9 percent in customers and 0.7 percent in sales. Foreign visitors travel plunged 29.6 percent to 2.1 billion yen.
Aggregate revenue of 25 companies (Note 2) of JTB Group was down 4.5 percent to 136.2 billion yen. Overseas travel posted 50.4 billion yen in revenue, down 4.9 percent, domestic travel 83.3 billion yen, down 3.3 percent, and foreign visitors travel 2.4 billion yen, down 29.1 percent.
