Tourism Western Australia Tourism Western Australia and Perth Region Tourism Organization Inc. has jointly published for the first time a guidebook in Japanese whose title goes: “Perth, Western Australia – On the Beach of the Indian Ocean.” It targets Japanese market and features marvels of nature and unique local experience in a move to allure more tourists. The book tells about not only the well-known places in Perth like Kings Park, Fremantle, and Rottnest Island, but also beach resorts like Rockingham and Mandurah, Swan Valley where the wineries can be visited, and Perth Hills where the reputed wildflowers can be seen at the neighboring national parks. All these sites are within two hours’ driving distance.

Noeleen Pearson, CEO of Perth Region Tourism Organization, says, “Everybody knows well about Sydney, Gold Coast, and other big cities on the east coast. I hope Japanese people become familiar with Perth by the aid of Japanese literature and inclined to visit the place. Perth is full of diversity to entertain visitors.” Japanese visitors to Perth in 2009 numbered about 54,000. Despite the significant decline of total outbound Japanese travelers, visitors from Japan to Perth dropped only marginally. By making use of the guidebook just out, they are keen to have more Japanese tourists.

Hideki Yoshizawa, Trade Marketing Manager for Japan at Tourism Western Australia, made a comment relating to the guidebook publication, “We have promoted Western Australia, starting from Perth, then stretching the travel route along the Coral Coast, and expanded the target areas to cover the inland for wildflower watching. We have taken gradual steps in promotion ‘from a point to routes, then from routes to zones,’ so to speak. These processes have successfully been reflected to the tour planning of Australia by Japanese travel agencies. The guidebook will help expand sightseeing area around Perth, the gateway, to its vicinity of two-hour driving away.”

Copies of the guidebook are available for distribution upon request made to Tourism Western Australia or Tourism Australia.
