Japan Airlines (JL) and All Nippon Airways (NH) unveiled the respective international passenger numbers carried during the month of April. Both airlines posted an approximately 30 percent decline in traffic year-on-year on the European routes due to disruption to the flight operations from ash emitted by the Icelandic volcano. Apparently, JAL saw further traffic decline since an approximately 20 percent decrease in capacity was implemented by the ongoing review of its business plan.

The number of international passenger loads flown on Japan Airlines in the month of April declined by 13.4 percent to 771,779 compared to the same month a year earlier, partly reflecting the capacity reduction carried out. Its seat capacity, in ASK (available seat kilometers) terms, was reduced significantly by 20.6 percent and its traffic, in RPK (revenue passenger kilometers) terms, decreased by smaller 14.2 percent, thus registering an average seat load factor of 70.2 percent, up by 5.2 percentage points.

logo_staralliance-anaThe number of international passengers transported by All Nippon Airways during the month of January, 2010 rose by 13.7 percent to 357,323 compared to the same month a year earlier. Traffic, as measured by revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), increased by 16.5 percent. The airline’s systemwide seat load factor showed a substantial improvement of 17.0 percentage points to 78.8 percent as capacity, measured by available seat kilometers (ASK), was reduced by 8.7 percent. All the destinations including North America, Europe and Asia-Oceania enjoyed an average increase of 13 percent in passenger loads. In terms of seat load factor, the North America route surged by 15.1 percentage points to 81.9 percent which is the highest among the airline’s network, followed by the Asia-Oceania route with 76.1 percent, up by 18.5 percentage points, driven by a positive growth from the prior-year period.

The Europe route has not yet started to show its full recovery, but, systemwide, a gradual increase of passenger loads is strongly felt as it is the case with the Bangkok and Singapore routes which are daily booked to capacity, reported ANA’s public relations office, adding that the advance booking profile also looks promising.

Meanwhile, the number of domestic passengers carried in the same month fell by 3.3 percent to 2,809,759 year-on-year with an average seat load factor of 56.9 percent. A decline in traffic in RPK terms remained at a 2.7 percent level as capacity in ASK terms was reduced by 6.0 percent.
