Currently, Japanese nationals account for some 90 percent of the passengers carried by Garuda (GA) on its Japan routes. Depending on the day of the week, however, its seat load factor drops due to an insufficient number of Japanese groups booked. The airline strives to generate traffic originating from both countries in an effort to improve the overall seat load factor, ensuring a stable capacity offer with a possible demand-driven capacity increase in the foreseeable future. With the inbound travel project launched this time, Garuda aims to achieve an overall seat load factor of over 70 percent on the Japan routes and, on its strategically-selected Chubu route, it strives to transport some 160 visitor arrivals monthly from Indonesia.

Kansai International Airport and Chubu International Airport released the number of the respective outbound and inbound travelers during the "Golden Week" vacation. In terms of the outgoing passenger volume previously forecasted, Kansai and Chubu expected an increase of 5 percent and 5.3 percent respectively year-on-year. The actual results, however, failed to grow as estimated and remained equalling the last year's level. By destinations, the traffic results have turned out quite differently from one destination to another. Both airports saw a year-on-year traffic increase in Korea, China and Hawaii. Chubu International Airport posted a 7 percent traffic increase also in Hong Kong/Macau. On the other hand, the destinations including U.S. and Oceania, where seat capacity had declined, showed a significant drop in passenger loads.

During the Golden Week (April 25 - May 6) , the number of outbound and inbound passengers at Kansai International Airport slid by 4.9 percent to 312,600, of which 160,500 were outbound passengers, down by 2.2 percent. By destinations, the short-haul destinations generated robust traffic growth, with Korea boosting by 6.7 percent to 35,100 passengers and China by 16.3 percent to 30,600 year-by-year. Hong Kong did relatively well, generating 11,400 passengers with a modest year-on-year decline of 1.7 percent. Also, Hawaii enjoyed a substantial increase of 12.5 percent to 8,100.

Northwest Airlines (NW) will reduce its Chubu/ Detroit and Chubu/ Manila routes effective from February 3. The airline presently operates daily service on the said routes, but will decrease its respective weekly frequency to 5. The airline's Pacific corporate communications office said that the frequency reduction is due to the recent global economic downturn followed by a sluggish traffic demand.

The public relations group of Central Japan International Airport Company (Centrair) also speculated, "The recent decreasing business trips and the tight travel budget in general must have had a negative impact on the airline's respective routes." Northwest Airlines, however, said that it would resume the daily service if the future market demand should allow it, citing, "The Chubu region will remain an important market for the airline."

Jetstar Airways (JQ) is scheduled to start its 7-weekly Narita/ Cairns and 5-weekly Narita/ Gold Coast services on December 18 this year. The airline's new Narita flights are to replace Qantas Airways' current Narita/ Cairns and Narita/ Melbourne services following the network restructuring of the Qantas Group due to the soaring jet fuel prices.

Masaru Kataoka, Regional General Manager Japan, Jetstar Airways mentioned, "During the expansion phase of our Kansai and Chubu flight operations, we have learned to adapt ourselves to the Japanese distribution system. As a low cost carrier (LCC), we will have to make direct sales to customers. However, we find it also vitally important for us to continuously focus on the role of travel agents in the Tokyo market as well."

United has recently announced that they intend to reduce the capacity offer by approximately 10% by the end of 2009 due to the surging costs of the jet fuel. The cancellation of the Nagoya/ San Francisco route is part of the airline's restructuring of its international network.
