logo_staralliance-anaTOKYO January 13, 2010 – ANA today applied to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to reduce its surcharge on international cargo shipments from February 1, 2010.

The cargo fuel surcharge is fixed for one month and revised on the basis of the average price of jet fuel for the month immediately preceding the announcement of the next revision, if any. The next surcharge will thus be set according to the average price of jet fuel for the month of December – as reported by the U.S. Department of Energy – and come into effect on February 1. As jet fuel averaged of US$83.20 per barrel in that month, the surcharge will be fixed in accordance with the chart below.
ANA again regrets that it must continue to ask its valued customers to share the burden of fuel costs, in spite of its own ongoing efforts to control costs and increase revenues.

Revised fuel surcharge for international cargo (yen/ kilo) from February 1 , 2010*

Routing Present (yen) REvised (yen)
Long-haul (Japan – N.America, Europe, Middle East) 75 69
Medium-haul Asia (Japan – Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) 59 53
Short-haul Asia (Japan – Korea, Taiwan, China) 75 69

*subject to approval by the relevant government authorities and may be changed without notice

Conditions for Revision (and Removal) of the Surcharge

The next revision to the cargo Fuel Surcharge, if any, will take effect on March 1, based on the average price of Singapore kerosene for the month of January, and will be announced in February.
If the monthly average cost of Singapore kerosene falls below US$30 per barrel, the fuel surcharge will be removed altogether.

200px-JAL_logo.svgThe JAL Group has requested for approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to maintain the current level of fuel surcharge on all international passenger tickets issued between January 1 and March 31, 2010.

The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the 3 month period from August to October 2009 averaged USD$78.04 per barrel. With reference to the fuel surcharge benchmark list for FY2009 (see below), this corresponds to Zone B where fuel surcharges range from 300 yen on a Japan – Korea ticket to 10,000 yen on a Japan- Brazil ticket per person per sector flown, on tickets purchased in Japan.

The fuel surcharge to be placed on tickets issued from April to July 2010 will be reviewed based on the average price of fuel for November 2009 through to January 2010.

The company is continuously conducting a wide range of countermeasures to limit the full impact of the price increase including fuel hedging, fuel consumption reductions, and the introduction of more fuel-efficient small and medium-sized aircraft to its fleet.

Despite these measures, the company is reluctantly obliged to ask its international passengers to bear part of the burden caused by the increase in the price of fuel.

Fuel Surcharge for the period: January 01 – March 31, 2010*

Route (Per person per sector flown)
For sales in Japan For sales outside Japan
Korea 300yen US$3
China, HongKong, Taiwan 1500yen US$15
Guam, Philippines, Vietnam 2000yen US$20

Hawaii, India, Indonesia 4000yen US$40
Canada, Mexico, Europe, Middle East, Oceania, USA
(excl. Hawaii)

Brazil 10000yen US$100

- Applicable to all international passenger tickets issued on or after January 01, to March 31, 2009.
- The surcharge applies to flights operated by Japan Airlines and its subsidiaries, including JAL code-share flights operated by other airlines.
- The planned level of fuel surcharge is subject to government approval.
