Outbound traveler numbers 2009 Likely Remain at 15.2 Million as Estimated – Middle-Aged Segment to Play Key Role in Travel Market After Global Economic Crisis
During a symposium for overseas travel trend held by Japan Travel Bureau Foundation (JTBF) Hiroshi Kurosu, Senior Researcher, JTBF repeated, as discussed before, that the number of outbound travelers in 2009 is expected to post 15.2 million, down by 4.9 percent year-on-year as estimated at the end of 2008. A 6 percent decrease of GDP is foreseen in future. If the number of outbound travelers declines at the same rate as a period from the fourth quarter of FY2008 to the first quarter of FY2009, the year 2009 will see roughly 15.3 million outbound travelers or over 14.5 million, in case the decrease rate remains the same as a period from the fiscal fourth quarter to the fiscal second quarter, the latter of which is severely hurt by the outbreak of the swine flu. Although the fiscal third quarter is expected to edge down slightly, when compared with the past statistics, it should not further decline and the fourth quarter of FY2009 should show a small recovery. “It doesn’t need to revise the estimated number of 15.2 million outbound travelers,” Kurosu concluded.
