On one of its long-haul scheduled flight over the North Pacific, flight SQ11 operated using a Mega top Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet, which departed from Los Angeles in the day, arrived in Singapore just past midnight via Tokyo, had successfully completed one of the most environmentally efficient flights with fuel savings of more than 10 tonnes as well as a 33-tonne reduction in carbon emissions. The fuel saved translate to around 6 per cent less than normally consumed on a similar flight.

Singapore Airlines will decrease its jet fuel surcharge from 110 US$ to100 US$ for tickets to be issued between October 1, this year and March 31,2009, in response to the recent Singapore kerosene market price which has shown a sign of decrease. The airline's Narita/ Los Angeles route, however, remains at the current surcharge level of 110 US$.

Among the foreign carriers there has been a significant movement for decreasing or freezing the jet fuel surcharge applicable from October. Delta Air Lines intends to lower a surcharge for its Japan/ Pacific route from 27,500 yen to 19,500 yen.

Singapore Airlines (SQ) will suspend its Kansai/ Bangkok/ Singapore route reflecting the route network restructuring. The airline explained that the network restructuring aims to implement greater flexibility to the ever-changing customer demand. Accordingly, the airline plans to increase flight frequency of the Australia, China and India routes which show a vibrant traffic growth with route profitability.

Since the Kansai/ Bangkok route is also served by Japan Airlines and Thai International, it is pointed out that the price competition has long become fierce in the market for airline tickets and package tours.
