Tourism Western Australia Tourism Western Australia (TWA)’s campaign “Wildflower Express 2010,” promoted jointly with Qantas Airways and Tourism Australia, is going successfully. Qantas Airways had earlier named its Narita-Perth flight “Wildflower Express” in a move to call travelers’ attention to 12,000 kinds of wild flower observed in Western Australia and increase visitors to the region.

Hideki Yoshizawa, trade marketing manager for Japan at TWA, says the bookings on specified tours in the campaign have increased over the past two years aided by heightened awareness on the part of Japanese travel agencies through TWA’s seminars and literature distribution. Tour courses have widened in number and variety from the one that stays solely in Perth to circular tours that visit the World Heritage Site Shark Bay and wineries at Margaret River. Some travel agencies are reportedly so enthusiastic as to display wildflowers at their store for sales promotion.

The campaign runs from June 1 to November 30 and the tours under promotion are those with departures from August 2 through November 29. Travelers who take one of those tours will get a gift set of wildflower postcards and plastic paper-holders with floral print on them. A photo contest, starting from this year, will be held at the campaign website.

Tourism Western Australia Tourism Western Australia and Perth Region Tourism Organization Inc. has jointly published for the first time a guidebook in Japanese whose title goes: “Perth, Western Australia – On the Beach of the Indian Ocean.” It targets Japanese market and features marvels of nature and unique local experience in a move to allure more tourists. The book tells about not only the well-known places in Perth like Kings Park, Fremantle, and Rottnest Island, but also beach resorts like Rockingham and Mandurah, Swan Valley where the wineries can be visited, and Perth Hills where the reputed wildflowers can be seen at the neighboring national parks. All these sites are within two hours’ driving distance.

Noeleen Pearson, CEO of Perth Region Tourism Organization, says, “Everybody knows well about Sydney, Gold Coast, and other big cities on the east coast. I hope Japanese people become familiar with Perth by the aid of Japanese literature and inclined to visit the place. Perth is full of diversity to entertain visitors.” Japanese visitors to Perth in 2009 numbered about 54,000. Despite the significant decline of total outbound Japanese travelers, visitors from Japan to Perth dropped only marginally. By making use of the guidebook just out, they are keen to have more Japanese tourists.
