Okazaki Summer Fireworks Festival, Aichi
The Okazaki Summer Fireworks Festival is an annual event to mark the beginning of summer, along with its long history and tradition, dates back to the days of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Okazaki is known as the birthplace of Tokugawa Iyeyasu and the land of the Mikawa warriors.
The origin is Sugou Shrine's Festival when the region's 'ferrymen' who operated the rafts crossing local rivers, paid homage to the local water god they depended on for good luck. Since 1630, this festival has been much celebrated and enjoyed by the local people. From the early 19th century, fireworks have been added as an integral part of the festivities.
