Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival, Hiroshima
One of the major highlights of summer in Miyajima is the Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival(宮島水中花火大会) held on August 14 every year. The world-famed vermillion 'Otorii'(Grand Gate) gateway to Itukushima Shrine provides a unique background unmatched anywhere to a spectacular display of fireworks rising from the sea. A UNESCO Heritage Site, it is rightfully considered one of Japans Three Finest Views.
The fireworks are set off from boats offshore, the water fireworks that are shot up into the air burst with a loud bang, fantastically lighting up the vermillion Otorii and the Itsukushima Shrine pavillion.
Photographers, both professionals and amateurs, are eager to take pictures of the vermillion torii gate and shrine buildings fantastically lit up in the night sky.
It has been voted by photographers as the number one location in a listing of the top 100 fireworks locations in Japan.
