Matsushima Lanterns and Fireworks Festival, Miyagi
The Matsushima Lanterns and Fireworks Festival has been held for about 700 years and is the biggest of all Matsushima events, in the Miyagi Prefecture. Over 10,000 fire-works are set off one after another continuously and about 8,000 lanterns are sent floating into Matsushima Bay in order to console the souls of ancestors in the next world. Only during 'Obon' Festival, the living relatives send off their ancestor's spirits on a good journey by lighting and floating colorful lanterns on local waters.
In addition, lanterns are set on the islets in the bay and illuminate the water. The beauty of this festival is the collaboration of fireworks and lanterns creating a contrast of flickering lights and water.
