Hakone Onsen 箱根温泉
Situated in Kanagawa Prefecture, there are 17 hot springs in the area, due to the volcanic activity of Mount Hakone. For over hundreds of years, Hakone has been a resort destination from the royal family of Japan to the commoners, in search of total and complete relaxation, in traditional Japanese style.
Hakone is a popular tourist site for its scenic views (numerous great viewing spots of Mt.Fuji), therapeutic onsen, and especially, "Kuro-tamago" (黒玉子 black eggs). A local specialty of eggs hard-boiled in the hot springs. The boiled eggs turn black and smell slightly sulphuric; consuming the eggs is said to increase longevity.
Access:
Take either the JR Kodama from Tokyo Station (40 min) or Odakyu "Romance Car" from Shinjuku Station (70 min) to Odawara Station. From there, take the Hakone Tozan Line (12 min) to Hakone Yumoto Station.
